Gerard Kennedy and Silken Laumann to Speak at Partners in Practice Conference for Local Educators

Posted September 13, 2004

Local educators will have the opportunity to hear Gerard Kennedy, Ontario Minister of Education, and Silken Laumann, four time olympian, deliver keynote addresses at the Partners in Practice Conference: Strategies for Success, taking place September 18, from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School. Participants will spend the rest of the day in workshops designed to focus on sharing strategies for success in teaching and learning.

This is the second year for the conference, sponsored by four local educational partners: Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board; Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board; Trillium Lakelands District School Board; and Trent University, School of Education and Professional Learning. This year's conference is hosted by Kawartha Pine Ridge DSB. Educators affiliated with the four partners registered in advance of the conference.

Partners in Practice is designed to:
· acknowledge and celebrate teachers and administrators
· improve student learning and achievement
· develop professional learning communities.

"Professional development is a key component of education, and Partners in Practice promotes the sharing of best practices and innovative ideas. The idea for the conference arose through collaboration and partnership with Trent University," says Dr. Avis Glaze, Director of Education for the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board. "We are pleased to host this year's conference in which educators can engage in professional learning and dialogue."

"After hosting the first Partners in Practice Conference last year at Trent University, the conference committee received overwhelming requests to make this an annual conference," says Dr. Deborah Berrill, Director, School of Education and Professional Learning, Trent University. "The excellent response from teachers and principals demonstrates their ongoing commitment to lifelong learning as a principle which underpins their professionalism."
