Dr. Garry Humphreys to discuss Health Care Challenges: November 20

Medical Officer of Health to speak as part of Trent's Physicians' Perspectives Series

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Garry Humphreys will discuss "Health Care Challenges," including new diseases, overeating and under activity on Thursday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m., in room 203 of Otonabee College, as part of Trent University's Physicians' Perspectives speaker series.

The talk, sponsored in partnership by Otonabee College and Trent's Institute for Health Studies, is open to the public; admission and refreshments are free of charge. A reception is scheduled to follow the talk in Otonabee College's Senior Common Room.

Health care needs are changing dramatically. We are living longer. Since 1973, 30 new diseases have emerged. Society is over-eating, being less active and creating tremendous strain on the health care system. Dr. Humphreys will discuss these issues, as well as the serious shortage of family doctors in our community.

Dr. Humphreys graduated in medicine from the University of Toronto in 1965. He served for 23 years with the Canadian Forces during which time he received training in public health, epidemiology, occupational, tropical and aviation medicine. He served for five years as the director, Clinical and Medical Affairs at Connaught Laboratories Ltd. in Willowdale Ontario. Since 1991, Dr. Humphreys has been the medical officer of health for the County and City of Peterborough.
