Trent University Celebrates Scholars and their Scholarship Donors at Reception: Sunday, November 2

Trent University will host its annual scholarship reception, recognizing student award winners and the donors who have made them possible on November 2 from 2 to 3 p.m. in Champlain College’s Great Hall.

This academic year, close to 1,300 students received scholarships. The reception provides an opportunity to acknowledge their achievement, and introduce students to the donors.

Two scholarships have been awarded this year for the first time. Dawn Pugh, a Trent/Fleming nursing program student is the recipient of The Janet Bews Scholarship.

The Peterborough and Area Alzheimer Society established the scholarship in June 2002 for students enrolled in the Trent/Fleming Nursing program, in honour of the late Janet Patricia Bews, a Trent professor in the Classics Department between 1966 and 1999.

Professor Bews, who died in 2000, was a strong advocate for the Alzheimer movement and served as President of the Peterborough and Area Alzheimer Society, from 1998 to 2000. The awarding of the scholarship is based on an essay application process showing a career interest in nursing care for persons with dementia.

Also awarded for the first time this year was the Robin Morris Scholarship, to Denise Wedderburn. The fund was established to honour the late Ms. Morris, who came to Trent in 1991 as a Business Administration student. Ms. Morris died after graduating from Trent.

The Robin Morris Scholarship will be awarded annually to a student in Business Administration whose spirit, enthusiasm and commitment to human resources management is considered to be outstanding.

Susan Clark, Trent’s vice president (academic) and provost will host a short program as part of the reception. President Bonnie Patterson will also address the scholarship recipients and donors. MP Peter Adams, Mayor Sylvia Sutherland and Mayor of City of Kawartha Lakes, Art Truax will be attending the reception.
