Trent Alumnus Short-Listed for the Booker Prize

Martel, a Trent University alumnus, is one of three Canadian authors on
the short list for the prestigious Booker Prize this year. Mr. Martel
was a philosophy major at Trent in the mid-1980s.
Announced this week, the short list is comprised of six novels, including
Mr. Martel’s Life of Pi. Family Matters by Rohinton
Mistry, Unless by Carol Shields, The Story of Lucy Gault
by William Trevor, Fingersmith by Sarah Waters and Dirt Music
by Tim Winton are the other short-listed novels.
The Booker Prize is one of the world’s most distinctive literary
awards. Established In 1968 it is designed to honour the best novel of
the year written by a citizen of the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.
The winner of the prize receives a cash sum of 50,000 pounds, which is
the equivalent of almost $120,000.
The 2002 Booker Prize winner will be announced on Tuesday, October 22,
at a ceremony held at the British Museum.
