a hat to Trent's International Students
Trent International Program (TIP) staff have a lot to celebrate as a new
academic year gets underway. Students are settling in, the annual TIP
camp was highly successful and, above all, there is a record number of
international students at Trent this year.
Applications submitted to Trent by international students for the 2002/03
academic year increased by 22 per cent over last year’s applications,
and there will be a total number of approximately 500 international students
at Trent this year. "That accounts for 10 to 11 per cent of Trent’s
student population, which is one of the highest ratios in the country,"
says TIP Interim Director Leonard Conolly. "There are 95 different
countries represented, reflecting our focus on diversity."
A portion of TIP student diversity was reflected in an impromtu cultural
show at the annual TIP camp that took place at Camp Kawartha on Labour
Day weekend. Students sang songs and read stories that reflected their
cultural heritage.
Just over 160 new international students spent Labour Day weekend at the
annual camp event. Students were picked up at Toronto’s Pearson International
Airport on Friday and bussed directly to the camp, gleaning their first
impressions of the Canadian landscape from the natural beauty of the Kawarthas.
Dr. Conolly participated in the weekend’s busy schedule and was pleased
with the success of the camp: "Everything went very well. There is
a social side to the camp experience, with lots of sports, games and activities,
and there is also an academic side because many international students
need some help to understand how the Canadian system - and Trent system
- work." He adds that he is pleased with the number of students involved
in the Trent International Program and feels enthusiastic and optimistic
about the upcoming year.
