Trent Professor Named One of Ontario's Outstanding University Teachers |

Trent University Geography professor Susan Wurtele has been named among Ontario's six most outstanding university teachers in a province-wide competition adjudicated by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Awards Committee. "I was extremely pleased," Professor Wurtele said when asked for her reaction to receiving the award. "It is a very significant award and recognizes something that Trent considers important and that I consider important." Professor Wurtele, who received her undergraduate degree from Trent, specialized in cultural geography. In terms of teaching, she is known for placing value not only on academic rigour, but on challenging her students to grow as thinkers, citizens and mature human beings. "OCUFA's Awards Committee was impressed with Professor Wurtele's commitment to experimental learning through field trips, community-based research projects and simulated conferences in her courses," said OCUFA President Michael Doucet. "Dr. Wurtele has had an enduring and impressive record of mentoring, inspiring, challenging and nurturing her colleagues and students." The awards, determined following a province wide competition adjudicated by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Awards Committee, will be handed out at an awards luncheon at the Renaissance Toronto Hotel Downtown, on Friday, June 9, 2006. The five other award recipients are: Geography Professor Michael Fox from Carleton University, Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Professor Deborah Cook from McMaster University, Modern Languages and Linguistics Professor Anna Moro from McMaster University, Biology Professor Jon Houseman from the University of Ottawa, and Social Work Professor Sarah Todd from Carleton University.
