Former Ambassador and Trent Alumnus to Speak at Trent University on March 22

Andrew Robinson to Discuss the Politics of Canadian Peacekeeping in the 21st Century

Trent University is pleased to announce that Andrew Robinson, former Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine and Jordan and distinguished Trent alumnus, will deliver a talk on the politics of Canadian Peacekeeping on March 22 at 5:00 p.m. in the Pit at Lady Eaton College.

Mr. Robinson's talk, entitled "Is Peace Patriotic? The Politics of Canadian Peacekeeping in the 21st Century" will explore what role, if any, Canadian peacekeeping has in the world, how the demands for intervention are changing with the advent of complex political emergencies and growing levels of intra-state conflict, and the ways in which Canadian peacekeeping reinforces a particular construction of "national identity".

A member of Trent's first graduating class (1964-67), Mr. Robinson also holds degrees from the University of Manchester and Queen's University. Throughout his career with the Department of External Affairs, Mr. Robinson has held such senior positions as Ambassador to Jordan, Canada's Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, and Director General of the Bureau of African Affairs. His most recent assignment abroad was as Canada's Ambassador to the Ukraine from 2001 to 2005, where he served throughout the historic democratic changes of the Orange Revolution.

Currently, Mr. Robinson is a Distinguished Senior Fellow with the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa. He also maintains connections with the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre, filling the roles of Ambassador-in-residence and Senior Advisor to the President.

The talk is free and open to all members of the public.
