Continuing Ed Offers Exciting New Course on Dixie, Bebop and Beyond |

Don't miss out on your chance to take part in this exciting course, entitled "Dixie, Bebop and Beyond: An Introduction to Jazz"! Jazz has its roots in the American south where this lively, energetic music evolved from the blending of blues and African rhythms with the European-American musical tradition. During the 1920's, jazz migrated upriver to Chicago and New York. Swing bands appeared in the 1930's and the 1940's saw the evolution of bebop. After bebop, jazz blossomed in many directions - hard bop, "free", fusion, "cool" and countless other styles. This course will introduce you to the basics of jazz -- its roots, its development, its musical components, its key innovators. While examining styles such as Dixie, swing, bebop and more, Craig will guide you in ways to listen to and understand the music. Musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Betty Carter and many more will be examined. Classes will be a mixture of lecture, listening, and discussion. No experience is necessary. Everyone is welcome! Instructor: Craig Paterson is a local jazz bassist, and a long-time jazz listener. He is on the Board of the Kawartha Jazz Society, and hosted a jazz show on Trent Radio for several seasons.
