Trent University's Department of Physics is pleased to present a public lecture on colliding galaxies by astronomer Prof. David Patton on Thursday, December 1, 2005. The lecture will be held in honour of 2005 being the World Year of Physics.

The collision of two galaxies can be a truly awe-inspiring event. In the process of merging two galaxies into one, galaxy collisions can also trigger the formation of new generations of stars, and provide fuel for black holes lurking at the centres of each galaxy.

This public lecture will begin with an overview of galaxy collisions, highlighted by spectacular images and simulations of nearby colliding galaxies. The remainder of the talk will focus on ongoing studies of colliding galaxies at greater distances and earlier times in the universe, using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Hubble Space Telescope.

This talk is free of charge and open to all. No science or mathematics background is necessary.
