Eid Dinner Raises $2,000 for Earthquake Victims

TMSA Dinner Raises $2,000 for Earthquake VictimsThe Trent Muslim Students' Association's (TMSA) Eid fundraising dinner to celebrate the end of Ramadan was a sold-out event Friday, November 4 with more than $2,000 going to help survivors of the devastating October 8 earthquake in South Asia.

Two hundred hungry diners jammed into the Lady Eaton College Dining Hall to try some tasty South Asian cuisine served up by Aramark. An after-dinner auction for South Asian sweet treats raised $500 while Trent International Program Director Michael Allcott raised about $400 with his pledge he would fast one day for every $75 he raised.

Salma Yarjani, Co-chair of the TMSA, said there was a great turn-out from both the Trent and Peterborough communities.

"We cannot be celebrating Eid when our brothers and sisters are suffering in another part of the world," said Ms. Yarjani, who welcomed diners to the event. "So thank you for coming tonight to celebrate Eid with us but also to celebrate the fact that, with the effort of a few students and the generosity and support of the Peterborough and Trent communities, we can make such a huge difference in people's lives."

The money raised will go to Edhi Foundation, a local organization in Pakistan that is making tents for earthquake victims. More than three million people were left homeless following the earthquake.
