Trent ranks high in lifesaving programs

Places third in Lifesaving Society's University and College Cup

Trent University Aquatics has won third place in the University and College Cup, awarded to the university or college with the largest Lifesaving Society Programs.

Trent received 7,651 points behind only the University of Western Ontario with 11,022 points and Brock University with 10,696 points. Points are awarded for every student the university or college teaches. The amount of points awarded depends on the level – the harder a course, the more points are given.

"The first and second place winners have much larger facilities and populations to draw from," said Jordan Lyall, aquatic supervisor. "I believe that our third place standing is a testament to the commitment of Trent University Aquatics staff in providing aquatics lifesaving education."

Trent placed ahead of institutions such as the University of Toronto, University of Waterloo and McMaster University.

According to Ms. Lyall, Trent Aquatics is regarded as a leader in providing high quality, lifesaving, drowning prevention, and first aid education. Trent Aquatics offers a full schedule of first aid classes and all the courses necessary to become a certified life guard or swimming instructor.

"It is the goal of any aquatics facility open to the public to offer high quality services.  One of the key ways to ensure this, is to hire aquatic staff who are well trained and highly skilled. We offer a high level of quality leadership training in order to achieve this," she said.
