Trent University Athletes Recognized by the City of Peterborough

Trent University athletes have been honoured with a number of Civic Awards, including Senior Male Athlete of the Year, presented by the City of Peterborough at a ceremony on June 7 at Showplace Peterborough.

Trent alumnus and Peterborough native, Stephen Hart was named Senior Male Athlete of the Year for 2004, while Trent University swimmer Alex Babaris was presented with his third Peterborough Civic Sport Award. Mr. Babaris' teammate Scott Farrow was presented with his first Civic Sport Award.

The Senior Male Athlete of the Year Award is the culmination of an outstanding 2004 for Mr. Hart, in which he won gold at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Nordic Ski championships in the men's 15-kilometre freestyle. Mr. Hart was also named OUA Athlete of the Week in January 2004, and named to the Canadian Nordic Ski team that competed at the World University Games in Austria in January 2005.

Mr. Babaris also had an outstanding year. A native of Toronto, he was the OUA swimming bronze medallist in the men's 50-metre fly at the 2004 championships. Mr. Babaris was the recipient of a University Athletic Award, an Excalibur Award of Distinction, the Gary Wolff Leadership Cup, was honoured as an OUA All-Star and was named the most valuable member of the swimming team. He also received a University Athletic Award, presented to third- and fourth-year students who have demonstrated a significant contribution to the varsity and campus recreation programs.

Mr. Farrow, a native of Mississauga, was a member of the Senior National Champion 200-metre freestyle relay team. He was an Ontario University Championship medallist and competed at the 2004 Canadian Interuniversity Championships. Mr. Farrow was also an individual finalist at the 2004 Canadian Open.

"Congratulations to all our athletes on this deserving recognition," says Athletic Director Bill Byrick. "As you compete internationally and across the country, you make Trent University as well as Peterborough proud. Your commitment to your respective sports and your academics is truly admirable. Both Stephen and Alex have contributed a great deal to Trent Athletics and these awards are a deserving tribute to their respective efforts."
