Trent Student Receives Prestigious Scholarship

Fourth-year Ancient History and Classics and Anthropology student Melody E. McIntyre has received a prestigious $8,000 U.S. PepsiCo EXCEL Award.

The award was based on Ms. McIntyre's marks and her extra-curricular involvement and is renewable for three years. The scholarship was available, through application, to the children of employees. Ms. McIntyre's mother works in logistics at QTG Canada Inc. in Peterborough, and Ms. McIntyre herself has worked part-time in the cafeteria there for two years.

Ms. McIntyre, who is extremely grateful for the support, says she will use the scholarship money to pay her tuition and rent as well as buy books. She's also set her sights on pursuing a master's degree in classical archeology or classics, and perhaps a Ph.D.

On the dean's list every year, Ms. McIntyre is a former varsity fencer, a Girl Guide leader, a Blue Red Stripe Belt in Tae Kwon Do and vice-president of the Classics Club. Last year, she volunteered in the audio-visual library.

Ms. McIntyre "fell in love" with Greek history when she took her first ancient history course in high school. In the future she hopes to have a career writing about ancient Greeks.
