DNA Project Will Create Thousands of Jobs |

Issued by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing Ontario Government Invests In Peterborough Research Facility For Immediate Release November 1, 2004 PETERBOROUGH — The government of Ontario is supporting a DNA research project that will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the Peterborough area, Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of the Environment, and Jeff Leal, MPP for Peterborough, announced today on behalf of John Gerretsen, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. "This state-of-the-art centre for DNA research and commercialization is great news for Peterborough," said Dombrowsky. "The project demonstrates our commitment to building a prosperous economy that is grounded in the knowledge and know-how of our people." The Ontario government will invest $1,326,500 in the Peterborough and Trent Headquarters for an Innovative Network in DNA Education and Research (PATHFINDER). This project will develop the infrastructure required to advance the commercialization of technologies related to DNA profiling, forensics, robotics, geomatics, bioinformatics, natural resources management and environmental sciences. It will also provide opportunities for education and training in applied sciences related to DNA technologies. "Through projects like this one, we are improving the quality of our workforce and creating new opportunities for education, training and employment in Ontario," said Leal. "We are proud to join our partners in taking the next big step in advancing DNA research and its commercialization potential." The project is expected to create 1,000 to 2,500 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs over the next 10 to 25 years. "The DNA Cluster is built upon a strong partnership between Trent University, Fleming College, the community's economic development agency and private sector partners," said Bonnie M. Patterson, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. "Through the PATHFINDER program, the provincial government has demonstrated leadership by supporting Peterborough's cluster initiative, which will add to Ontario's prosperity." Today's investment was made through Ontario's Rural Economic Development (RED) program, which invests in projects that support sustainable rural economies and community partnerships.
