40th Anniversary Art Exhibit Opens at Trent Tonight at 6:30 p.m. |

Students Celebrate with Live Concert at 8 p.m. Trent University's Anniversary week is in full swing and this evening promises lots of excitement with plans for both the opening of The Spirit of Trent art exhibit and Ruby Tuesday, live music performances held by Trent students for Trent students, both to be held at the University's Symons campus tonight. The art show will open at 6:30 p.m. at Champlain College Senior Common Room and will feature recent pieces done over the summer by a select group of artists who have a connection with the University, as well as some earlier pieces. The theme is "The Spirit of Trent" and the art will reflect a variety of responses to Trent University's environment, people, identity, and history. Artists include Nicole Bauberger, Renee Bedard, Dave French, Joanne Heath-Menger, Gordon Johnston, Dave Lasenby, Jean Nind, and Nancy Simmons Smith. Dave French, senior tutor at Champlain College and chaplain at Trent University is the curator of the exhibit. "The idea was to provide the artists with a theme that would give structure to the show, but also leave it wide open," said Mr. French. "And the exhibit does have a 'wide open' quality to it. Some works are very obviously linked to Trent while others are obliquely Trent." Ruby Tuesday will begin at 8 p.m. at The Great Hall at Champlain College where Trent University students will present a Tribute to Trent with live music of all kinds from all eras and licensed beverages to go along with the entertainment. "Ruby Tuesday" is a revival of a similar event held back in the early days of Trent, where students would gather to hear the latest campus groups and performers. Born out of the 60's, Trent students will commemorate 40 years of music at Trent and will welcome acts of all musical styles and influences. The Pylons, a 10-piece rock 'n ska band, will be the headline act. "Last evening's highly successful Potluck Dinner held by the students of the Trent International Program did a splendid job of kicking off a week packed with celebrations for Trent's 40th," said Professor Gordon Johnston, chair of the 40th anniversary committee. "This evening's events continue to express that irrepressible and varied Spirit of Trent with art and music. It all leads up to The Big Party this Saturday, when we hope the entire community will come out for a free barbecue, merry-go-round, tours, music and more!"
