Trent Partners With McGill and Université du Québec à Montréal to Organize Women's History Conference

A conference on women's history in Canada is the product of a partnership among professors and graduate students at Trent, McGill and Université du Québec à Montréal, to take place May 7 - 9, 2004, at Montreal's McGill University.

"Feminism and the Making of Canada: Historical Reflections" will look at how women's history, gender history, and feminist analyses of Canadian history have had a profound impact on how Canadians see our past, our present, and the world around us.

The idea for the partnership originated with Dr. Joan Sangster, director of the Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Native Studies at Trent. Prof. Sangster was last year the Seagram Chair at the Institute for the Study of Canada, at McGill and in contact with other academics in Montreal, not only at McGill, but also at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). The idea was supported and each university invited interested graduate students to join the organizing committee.

The conference will be bilingual, and was co-organized by Prof. Suzanne Morton at McGill and Prof. Magda Fahrni at UQAM as well as two Frost Centre doctoral students in Canadian Studies, Donica Belisle and Amy Warnar-Brown, and graduate students from McGill and UQAM, Liz Kirkland and Amélie Bourbeau.

"This conference has provided a great opportunity for Trent Ph.D. students to connect with graduate students and faculty members in Quebec and take an active role in conference organizing," says Prof. Sangster

"Feminism and the Making of Canada: Historical Reflections" is supported by a SSHRC conference grant as well as funding from the Frost Centre and McGill's Institute for the Study of Canada, Department of History, Faculty of Arts, and the Office of the Vice-President (Research).
