Trent University's Allan Marshall Pool: host to a new wave of opportunities

Learning and life skills, the focus of New Year programming

There are new opportunities to be explored in the pool and on deck in the New Year at Trent University's Allan Marshall Pool. Its roster of community programs has been expanded to include the Red Cross Babysitter's Course, for youth 11 years - and older - and a Lifesaving Society Junior Lifeguard Club. In these courses, Trent's Athletics department is increasing the scope of its offerings to the community as it teaches teamwork and life skills.

"The Allan Marshall Pool and its staff have always played a strong role in the community, and as such, we are constantly looking to offer community programs that help to educate and involve children of all ages," says Jordan Lyall, acting aquatic supervisor.

The Babysitter's course helps youth develop into responsible, safe and confident babysitters by teaching them skills in first aid and emergency response, basic baby and child care, injury prevention and coping. The cost is $35 and the course will run from 6 - 9:30 p.m. on January 24 and 31 and February 7.

The Lifesaving Society Junior Lifeguard Club offers an action-packed aquatic challenge for those who love the water and who want more than "lessons." Quick learners, those caught between levels or programs, and youth who thrive in an energetic learning environment will love this club. The Club stresses fun and skill development based on personal best achievement. Youth must be between the ages of eight and 12, be comfortable in deep water, be able to swim at least 25 metres and be able to tread water for two minutes non stop in deep water.

These new course offerings are in addition to Trent's Red Cross AquaQuest swimming lessons and Lifesaving Society programs, which are scheduled to start in the New Year and still have spaces available.

Ms. Lyall encourages even those who haven't swam in a while to consider taking the plunge.

"Don't let that stop you from signing up for a lesson," she says, explaining Trent offers a free screening service that will ensure children are enrolled at an appropriate level.

Programs are available to all ages from six months to adults. Classes for those with special needs are also available.

The Allan Marshall Pool is the area's leader in training swimming instructors and lifeguards, and is also an authorized test centre for the Canadian Coast Guard boat examinations.
