Trent proves to be national power in rowing

The Trent Excalibur rowing team competed in the Canadian University Rowing Championships November 1 and 2, in Victoria, British Columbia, earning three medals. After the very successful Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships the previous weekend, Trent was poised to open some eyes at the national level.

"It was an exciting experience for our athletes," said OUA coach of the year Carol Love. "The results were so tight in so many events that only fractions of seconds separated a number of boats."

Leading the way was Rob Park, with a silver medal in the men’s lightweight single, narrowly missing the gold by half a second. Peter Van Rooijen took the bronze in the men’s heavyweight single.

"It was a great performance for both Pete and Rob," said Ms. Love. "They both knew they had a great shot at winning nationals, unfortunately for Peter the weather changed after qualifying, and the water was rough. He had the fastest qualifying time, but it’s a learning experience, and it should prove to help him technically in the future."

Shawn McIntosh teamed up with Jared Kunza for a fifth-place finish in the men’s heavyweight double. Shawn then teamed up with Peter and Rob to capture the bronze in the men’s heavyweight eight.

"It was an amazing race, Rob had actually just finished his singles race, and barely had enough time to change boats, yet alone to catch his breath," said Ms. Love. "Capturing the bronze in the eight is amazing. It’s the marquee event of the competition because it shows both the depth and the top-end talent of your program."

On the women’s side, Julianna Stonehouse finished in fifth place in the women’s heavyweight single. Kaitlyn Byrick and Mandy Sarcadi teamed for a fifth-place finish in the women’s lightweight double. Kaitlyn and Mandy also competed in the women’s heavyweight eight that narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing in fourth place.

"It was another great race, it’s unfortunate we didn’t come away with a medal, but we’re very pleased with the results from our athletes on both the men’s and the women’s side."
