"You have the most wonderful job in the world," Roberta Bondar tells 450 educators Trent University School of Education hosts inaugural conference for educators
Dr. Bondar was welcomed by thunderous applause and a standing ovation as she began her keynote address at the conference. Her message was an inspirational one, as she congratulated those who go into the classroom each day to encourage curiosity and facilitate learning. Dr. Bondar’s mother and sister are educators and she applauded those who had decided to go into teaching later in their lives, as her own mother did. "If you don’t listen to your soul, if you don’t listen to the fun things inside of you, you’re going to miss out on these experiences," she said. Dr. Bondar also congratulated the sell-out crowd and event organizers for an excellent inaugural conference. "I like firsts," she said. "And I’m glad to be here to share this one with you today." Following her address, Dr. Bondar met with dozens of well-wishers and fans of her work. The first-ever conference for educators was organized by Trent University’s new School of Education and Professional Learning in partnership with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, Trillium Lakelands District School Board, Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic School Board, Ontario Principals’ Council, Ontario Catholic Principals’ Council, the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO), and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation of Ontario (OSSTF). Both practicing teachers and administrators and teacher candidates from Trent University’s School of Education and the Queen’s-Trent Concurrent Education program attended to share and celebrate best practices in the teaching profession. After the keynote address, participants broke out into sessions to learn about reading strategies, conflict management, special education, problem solving in the classroom, designing math activities and much more.
