Training and Examinations for Boat Operators

Training available for boat operators required by the Canadian Coast Guard

Trent University offers the Lifesaving Society's BOAT (Boat Operator Accredited Training) which teaches boater responsibilities, the 'rules of the water', and how to respond in a boating emergency.

Trent University's Department of Athletics & Recreation is an accredited test centre for powerboat operators to earn the Pleasure Craft Operator (PCO) card, required by the Canadian Coast Guard. Operators who were born after April 1, 1983 and those who operate a motor boat less than 4 metres (including personal watercraft) are required to possess a PCO card now. The PCO card is earned by scoring a minimum of 75% on a test of basic boating safety knowledge.

A variety of training formats are available:

  • Full Course: an 8-hour course aimed at those with minimal or no boating experience.
  • Refresher Clinic: a 1-2 hour review for those with considerable boating experience.
  • Exam Only: For experienced boaters. Study at home with our BOAT study guide.
