Peter Adams Recognized for Support of Research Libraries in Canada
"Mr. Adams and his caucus have worked hard to support post secondary institutions and research libraries. He has played a key role in ensuring the Federal government provides tangible support for our institutions," said CARL President Bill Maes. The Canada Foundation for Innovation has recognized the role of libraries in building a national research infrastructure through a major award that established the Canadian National Site Licensing Project. In addition, the Government of Canada has greatly assisted with reimbursement of some of the indirect costs of research to academic institutions. Research libraries have also been recognized for their contributions to the implementation of the Governments’ Innovation Agenda. "I am glad that we were able to have this ceremony in recognition of Mr. Adams. The role he and his caucus play is extremely important in supporting post secondary institutions," stated Ms. Gwendolyn Ebbett, CARL Board of Directors who acknowledged Mr. Adams during today’s ceremony. CARL was established in 1976 and comprises Canada’s twenty-seven major academic libraries, the Library and Archives of Canada and the Canada Institute of Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI). The Association is dedicated to promoting excellence in Canada’s academic research community. William Peter Adams, Professor Emeritus of Trent University, was born in the United Kingdom in 1936, earned his B.A. at the University of Sheffield, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. at McGill University. He is married, has four children, and lives in Peterborough. He was founder of the Department of Geography at Trent University. He was chair in that Department from 1968-1977 and remained a professor while also serving as Dean of Graduate Studies, Associate Dean of Science, Associate Vice-President, 1977-1987. He was elected M.P.P. for Peterborough, 1987-1990, and elected to the House of Commons in 1993 where he is currently serving. He has published numerous articles on the Canadian Arctic, on the environment and other geographical topics, and has written and co-authored books in the same field. In
a recognition ceremony which took place at Trent University during
the annual meeting of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL)
on May 23, The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) recognized
Trent Professor Emeritus Mr. Peter Adams, M.P. and Chair of the Government
Caucus on Post Secondary Education and Research, for his ongoing support
of post secondary education and research libraries in Canada.
