Naila KabeerNaila Kabeer is Professor of Development Studies in the University of London at the School of Oriental and African Studies.  Having studied at University College London and the London School of Economics and Political Science, for many years she was a Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex in Brighton, United Kingdom.

Naila Kabeer is a social economist who has worked extensively on gender, poverty, livelihoods and labour markets, social exclusion and social protection, and citizenship.  Her research has been conducted in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and in the United Kingdom.  She has developed frameworks and methodologies for integrating gender concerns into development policy and planning, and has substantial experience in undertaking advisory work with governments, bilateral and multilateral agencies, and non-governmental organizations.

A prolific writer, Naila Kabeer has written, edited or co-edited over 25 books, has written numerous advisory reports, and has published more than 25 book chapters or articles since 2000.  Of her many publications, she is probably best known for three: Mainstreaming Gender Equality in Poverty Eradication and the Millennium Development Goals: A Handbook for Policy Makers; The Power to Choose: Bangladeshi Women and Labour Market Decisions in London and Dhaka; and Reversed Realities: Gender Hierarchies in Development Thought.  Her most recent books are Mainstreaming Gender and Social Protection in the Informal Economy and Global Perspectives on Gender Equality: Reversing the Gaze, which she co-edited with Agneta Stark.
