Born in Toronto and raised in Peterborough, Professor Aitken was a member of the first graduating class of Trent University (1964). His areas of expertise include second-language acquisition and the history of the Spanish language. He co-authored (with Professor Anna Saroli of Acadia University) the first Canadian Edition of ¡Arriba!, an introductory Spanish textbook (©2005 by Pearson Education). As an extension of this project, Professor Aitken adapted the online exercise material of the ¡Arriba! Companion Website (a textual approach) and revised the content of Más arriba (a visual approach), his accompanying electronic workbook. Más arriba (©2001-08 by Gary Aitken) can be found at the following URL:
As an instructor of Spanish language, Professor Aitken has presented conference papers and published articles on language methodology and classroom dynamics. He collaborated with Pili Alderete in the creation of CD ROM material for the second edition of Conexiones, an intermediate-level Spanish textbook (©2002 by Prentice Hall). Later he revised this material for the third edition of Conexiones . Following this, he incorporated sound files into the exercise material of Más arriba.
For the past two years, he collaborated with Anna Saroli in the preparation of the Second Canadian Edition of ¡Arriba!, which was published by Pearson Education in 2008. Included in this project was the adaptation of the hard-copy and audio material for use within the electronic format of MySpanishLab, Pearson's online, all-purpose language resource. His latest project was an update and facelift for Más arriba which now complements the Second Canadian Edition of ¡Arriba!, although the exercise material is suitable for any introductory approach.
