If you are a first-year student with little or no background in Spanish, you enroll in HSST 1001H/1002H, a course designed for absolute beginners. It is an introduction to all of the language skills but the classroom emphasis is on oral Spanish. It may interest you to know that we attempt to use Spanish as much as we can in every class, even at this level, in order to introduce you to the language in as natural a manner as possible.
If you have completed the advanced level in high-school Spanish or you have lived and studied for a time in a Spanish-speaking environment, you may be able to enroll in HSST 2001H/2002H, an intermediate language course. A placement test is given during the Introductory Seminar Week. If you are a native speaker of Spanish, you progress directly to upper-year coursework in literature and civilization.
