Student Drop-in Help Center Hours
Our 2017FA term help center hours have now begun. A calendar is available at Drop-In Hours. Some hours are sepcifically for statistics (MATH 1051H), while others are for any general MATH courses (e.g., 1005H, 1110H, 1350H). We encourage students to take advantage of these hours and the tutors provided.
September 12, 2017: Further Announcement on the Passing of Dr. Bing Zhou
The Trent University community was saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Bing Zhou, a faculty member with the Mathematics Department. Professor Zhou joined the Department of Mathematics at Trent in 1990 and became a tenured professor in 1994. He became a full professor in 2000 and was the chair of Mathematics from 2002 through to 2007. Popular with colleagues and students alike, Prof. Zhou often said how lucky he was to be able to do what he enjoyed most in life, combining his love for math with his love for teaching.
Trent University extends heartfelt sympathies to Prof. Zhou’s family and friends, and to all who knew him.
A memorial service for Prof. Zhou will be held on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gathering Space at Trent University’s First Peoples House of Learning. All are welcome to attend.
His family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations are sent to the Bing Zhou Memorial Fund at Trent University. To make a donation, please visit www.trentu.ca/give

August, 2017: The Passing of Dr. Bing Zhou
We were saddened and shocked to hear of the passing of our friend and colleague, Dr. Bing Zhou, on August 10, 2017. A memorial service to honor the life and work of Dr. Zhou will be held on Wednesday, September 20th at 2:00pm in the First Peoples House of Learning Gathering Space in Gzowski College (first floor). All members of the Trent community who knew Bing are encouraged to come and join us in remembering our friend, colleague, teacher and mentor.
May 18: Math Talk (Counting Colours using Polynomials)
A visiting scholar, Dr. Jose Aliste Prieto, from Universidad Andres Bello (Santiago, Chile) presented an interesting mathematics talk on counting colours using polynomials. Dr. Prieto gave a brief introduction to graph colourings and some natural problems which arise, as well as how algebra can help solve them.
May 15: Successful Defense for Kaly Zhang!
Congratulations to Kaly Zhang, who successfully defended his Master's thesis, Positive Soliutions for Boundary Value Problems of Second-Order Ordinary Differential Equations. Kaly will be starting a PhD program in mathematics in the Fall at Queen's University, and we wish him all the best.

2017-18 Course Offerings and Schedule
The course offerings for the 2017/18 school year have been finalized for MATH at Trent, and a sheet with the courses and instructors has been posted for your consideration. The registrar will post the actual schedules (days and times) in the next couple of weeks, and then course registration opens in June. The sheet is here.
April 12th Peterborough Regional Science Festival
Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 display their projects in biological, physical, engineering, and computing sciences. This is a day-long event that concludes with an awards ceremony scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Wenjack Theatre at Trent University. The top winners will win trips to compete at the Canada Wide Science Fair at the University of Regina, Saskatchewan May 14 – 20, 2017
March 22nd Math Talk
This session will be continuing with the Mathematics Talk Lecture; a series presented by various professors sponsored by the Mathematics Department. Professor Haile Gessesse will be discussing Modelling Stock Prices Over Time. This event takes place in GCS 103 from 12:00pm until 1:00pm. Hope to see a great turn out!
Pi Day 2017- March 14
Join the Math Society and Physics Club to celebrate Pi Day with free pie and refreshments. Professor Nicolae Strungaru will also be presenting a talk on the number Pi.

Dec 2nd, Final Seminar Talk of the Term
Professor Nicolae Strungaru gave the final seminar talk of the term today, discussing the origins and construction of the complex numbers. He also gave a talk in previous weeks on a piece of his research: diffraction. Thanks to everyone to attended the talks this term, and we hope to see you next term for even more interesting mathematics!
November 30th, Annual Fall Awards Ceremony
The annual Peter Gzowski College Honors and Awards Ceremony was held at The Gathering Space in the College this evening. The Mathematics Department awarded a number of exceptional students for their performance in the past year's mathematics courses. Brandon Leipner-Johns was awarded the Victor T. Ridley Memorial Prize, an annual prize awarded to the leading undergraduate in first-year mathematics. Melissa Van Bussel and Westley Brown were also presented with awards for Outstanding Achievement in First Year Mathematics. The Cyril and Jenny Carter Scholarship was awarded to Emily Korfanty and Vladislav Abramov for outstanding performance in second-year mathematics courses. And finally, Jeet Trivedi was awarded the Guinand Scholarship for top performance among students entering their fourth year of studies. Congratulations to all award winners!

November 21th, Professor Honored with Rotary Award
Professor Kenzu Abdella was honored by the Rotary Associated of Peterborough for his international service at the annual Paul Harris Fellow Awards Dinner. Professor Abdella was honored for his work as the president of the Kawartha Muslim Religious Association, a charitable organization that promotes interfaith and cultural understanding.
November 11th, 2016 Math Talk
Professor Nicolae Strungaru presented his talk today on The Islander's Problem. The Islander's Problem is a Mathematical puzzle with a very interesting solution. Professor Strungaru was able to discuss the solution while also engaging in discussions about other Mathematical reasoning problems. This Math Talk was part of a series Professor Strungaru and the Mathematics department have started this year that helps to engage and entertain students. Professor Strungaru previously gave a Math Talk on the ABC Conjecture, an unsolved problem in Mathematics last month. There will be another Math Talk before the term ends. Thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed the talk.

A new international partnership between the Trent University Mathematics Department and Tianjin University of Commerce in China will bring new international students to Trent starting as early as September 2017 following a milestone articulation agreement signed.
