Title

Biography / History

Gordon Herbert Roper was born in Brantford,Ontario in 1911. He is married to Helen Caddy Roper and they havetwo children, Susan Lawrence and Mark Roper. Professor Roper waseducated at Peterborough Collegiate Institute; George WilliamsCollege in Chicago and the University of Chicago (B.A. 1938, M.A.1939 and Ph.D. 1944). He served in the Canadian Army from 1944to 1946. Professor Roper taught English at Yale University from1939 to 1940; at the University of Chicago from 1941 to 1944 andin 1946; at Trinity College at the University of Toronto from1946 to 1969 and at Trent University from 1969 to 1975. He hasresearched and written extensively on a number of English Literaturesubjects including Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Nathaniel Hawthorneand Robertson Davies. Roper was a founding member of the MelvilleSociety and an advisor to the Centre for the Editing of EarlyCanadian Texts. He was a key figure in the building of the ShellCollection of Canadian Literature for Bata Library at Trent University.

Scope and Content

This fonds consists of two Christmas greetingcards sent to the Ropers by Ned and Vi Pratt. The card dated 1953called "Night" with woodcut illustration by their daughter,Claire Pratt, contains a simple seasonal greeting. The other card,undated, contains a poem called "Magic in Everything",and is embellished with pen and ink decorations by Claire Pratt.Both cards are enclosed in a Trinity College envelope. Also includedare three paper fragments: a typewritten one presumably quotingan aphorism by Pratt; a handwritten note referring to pages 380and 396 in the volume "Collected Poems" in Roper's handwriting;and another reference to page 230.

The 5 items in this fonds were discoveredloosely inserted inside the volume "Collected Poems"signed by Gordon Roper, and housed now in Special Collections,Bata Library (call # PS 8531 .R3 A17 1958, barcode 0116404395307).According to Trent University professor Zailig Pollock, "Magicin Everything" by Pratt is unpublished.
