Reverend Elgie E.M. Joblin fonds.-- 1936-1989. -- 45 cm of textual records. -- 18 photographs.

Biography / History

Elgie Ellingham Miller Joblin was born April6, 1909 in Toronto to Flora Gertrude Elgie, of Toronto, and FrederickGeorge Joblin, of the Isle of Wight in England. Elgie marriedHelen Majorie Smith of Rawdon Township on October 21, 1936. Hestudied at Victoria College, Emmanuel College and the Universityof Toronto. His M.A. thesis was entitled, "The Educationof the Indians of Western Ontario". He was ordained as aUnited Church minister in 1936. He served the Aboriginal Peoplesof Ontario as a student and minister in South Caradoc from 1936to 1944. He taught and supervised the residential school at Muncey,Ontario from 1946 to 1957. He was the Assistant and later theAssociate Secretary for Home Missions from 1957 to 1971. He servedat Coboconk, Ontario, until his retirement from the ministry.He died in 1993.

Custodial History

This fonds was created by Reverend Joblinand in his custody until he had it forwarded, as a donation tothe Trent University Archives, by his brother Professor KingsleyJoblin.

Scope and Content

This fonds consists of publications, photographs,news clippings, bulletins and reports pertaining to Reverend ElgieE.M. Joblin's interest in aboriginal affairs and in particular,the education of aboriginal peoples in Canada. Included in thefonds are references to the Canadian Association in Support ofNative Peoples, the Indian-Eskimo Association, copies of "IndianNews" and a Cree hymn book. Also included in the fonds are14 scrapbooks of clippings on native issues.
