Title

Jean Murray Cole fonds. Additions. -- 1968-2006. -- 1.6 m of textual records and other materials.

Biography / History

Jean Murray Cole was born in 1927. She is a former journalist and has published a number of historical texts concerning Peterborough and area. Her major publications include Exile in the Wilderness (1979), The Loon Calls: A History of the Township of Chandos (1989), Origins: The History of Dummer Township (1993), South Monaghan: The Garden of Eden (1998), and This Blessed Wilderness (2001). She is also the author of many articles and has edited several publications including, with her husband, A.O.C. Cole, The Illustrated Historical Atlas of Peterborough (1975). Jean has been an active member and supporter of such groups as the Ontario Historical Society, TVOntario, Peterborough Historical Society, Canadian Canoe Museum, the Peterborough Public Library Board, and The Friends of the Bata Library.

Fonds was created by and in the custody of Jean Murray Cole before it was donated to Trent University Archives in 2008.

Scope and Content

Fonds consists of manuscripts and research materials pertaining to Jean Murray Cole's biography of Chief Factor Archibald McDonald, entitled Exile in the Wilderness, and her published compilation of Archibald McDonald's letters, entitled This Blessed Wilderness. Also included are extensive research materials on Ranald McDonald (son of Archibald McDonald). Other research relates to Peterborough area settlers including the Strickland family (Catharine Parr Traill and Susanna Moodie), Frances Stewart, and Sandford Fleming. Materials encompass all aspects of research, correspondence with descendants, papers given by Cole, newspaper and magazine articles, maps, and photographs. The fonds also contains Cole's files on "Edwardian Peterborough" (a conference held in May 2005).

Folders 1 to 20 consist of photocopies of correspondence and journals of Archibald McDonald, 1814-1849.
Folders 21 to 32 consist of correspondence and permissions relating to the publishing of This Blessed Wilderness. Also included are 7 computer discs.

Correspondence and photocopied research materials relating to the biography of Archibald McDonald and the publishing of Exile in the Wilderness.

Box 4

Correspondence and photocopied research materials regarding Ranald McDonald, including information on his sojourn in Japan. Includes 21 photographs.

Correspondence and photocopied research materials regarding Ranald McDonald, including correspondence with Fred Schodt, colleague of Jean Cole and biographer of McDonald.

Correspondence, newspaper and magazine articles, and research materials relating to Catharine Parr Traill, Susanna Moodie, Henry Strickland Traill, Frances Stewart, Sir Sandford Fleming. One file relates to Polly Cow Island. Other correspondents include Alex Edmison and Miss Joan Heddle.

Files pertaining to the Peterborough Edwardian conference, May 2005 with extra material added by Professor John Wadland in 2006; Cole book reviews; correspondence with Iain MacDonald, 1994-2006; and paper given at University of Calgary in 2002 by Cole on Jane Klyne McDonald, second wife of Archibald McDonald.
