Artemis Literary Sources

Artemis is Gale's search engine for the MLA International Bilbiography (MLA) and Literature Resource Center (LRC) databases.

  • MLA is an extensive database of journal article citations from over 4,000 journals.
  • LRC is smaller database of full-text reference books and articles.

Search both databases simultaneously.

  • Search by person (by or about), name of work, keyword.
  • Limit results by content type, document type, publication title.

Added features in Artemis: (Watch a 2:20-min video on how these work.)

  • Term frequency: a diagram of how often your terms appear in works over time.
  • Term clusters: a diagram of where your search terms appear.

MLA International Bibliography indexes books, articles and dissertations published on modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics, providing coverage from 1926 to the present. It includes the MLA Thesaurus and the MLA Directory of Periodicals, which lists detailed information on over 5,500 journals, including over 4,400 indexed in the Bibliography

Literature Resource Center provides up-to-date biographical information, overviews, full-text literary criticism and reviews on more than 130,000 writers in all disciplines, from all time periods and from around the world.

MLA does NOT include full-text articles, but you can link to full text available in our other e-journal packages using links to Get It! Trent.

The Artemis interface was introduced in February 2014, eliminating the previous Gale interface.

MLA covers 1926 - current.
Update Frequency:
MLA is updated 10 times per year. LRC is sporadic.
Stable URL:

Note the MLA database does NOT provide the full text of the article, only the citation.  To find a link to the article, first find the article and then look for a permanent link on the page where you find it.

For documents which are full text, click on "Citation Tools".  A box opens, providing a full citation to be used when citing the item (choose from APA or MLA), and a durable URL.

Here's a screen capture:

There's also a durable URL and full citation provided at the bottom of the page.
