Donald B. Smith's just released, Mississauga Portraits: Ojibwe Voices from Ninetheenth Century Canada, recreates the lives of eight Ojibwe. It is the sequel to his earlier book, Sacred Feathers, a biography of the influential Mississauga chief Peter Jones. His talk at Trent will focus on the extraordinary George Copway of Rice Lake. He became Canada's most successful writer in the United States in the late 1840s and early 1850s, feted and dined by the great and the near great, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, only a few years before he wrote the Song of Hiawatha, Longfellow's well-known poem on the Ojibwe.
