What We Watch: Criterion-on-Demand

The Library subscribes to Criterion-on-Demand, a licensed digital film service that allows users to stream or download from among 3,000  films, many of them bilingual.  Criterion provides access to a small number of documentary and foreign films as well as numerous feature films from studios such as Dreamworks, Mongrel, Paramount, and Warner Brothers.  Most films have same language subtitles and some are close captioned.

Criterion-on-Demand is working on upgrading its streaming service to make it compatible with the Chrome browser and easier to use.  In the meantime, to stream Criterion-on-Demand movies, download Microsoft Silverlight, which is compatible with Firefox, Safari, and some Internet Explorer browsers.

Since our subscription to Criterion-on-Demand started in February 2014, we have had over 2,600 film views.  The seven most viewed films to date are:

  1. Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (2005)
  2. Away from Her (2006)
  3. The Searchers (1956)
  4. Capitalism: A Love Story (2009)
  5. Whale Rider (2002)
  6. Memento (2000)
  7. Smoke Signals (1998)

Pontypool (2008), weighing in at number eleven, is a psychological thriller by Canadian director Bruce McDonald.  Based on Tony Burgess' novel of the same name, it tells the tale of a deadly virus that infects a small Ontario town.  Curious about the outcome?  Find both the e-book and the digital film in TOPCAT.
