Subscriptions Not Renewed in 2015-16

University libraries’ acquisitions budgets have been under considerable pressure for some years due to subscription price increases, currency exchange fluctuations, consolidation among leading publishers, and financial pressures at individual institutions.  In past years, the Trent Library pulled from existing trust funds to cover costs, but those funds are insufficient to support this year's renewals.

The 2015-16 fiscal year was particularly trying for us, and some tough decisions had to be made as we realized our acquisitions budget would fall far short of our expected subscription expenditures.  After review of the usage and cost of specific resources, librarians identified subscriptions which would not be renewed for 2016.

Some of these can be easily reinstated later, with no loss of coverage, if the Canadian dollar value and our budget improve.  Others will not be easily recovered, and will always have gaps reflecting the years we didn't subscribe.  Still others may never be reinstated.  Where full text is lost, it will be available through Interlibrary Loan, which now offers desktop delivery, often within a few days.  Where finding tools (indexes) are lost, less specific databases will partially fill their place and broader searching across several databases will be more important.

Cancelling resources is vile work for librarians, and we consider many of these titles essential.  But the Trent Library is not alone in this situation, as you'll see in some of the postings in the left menu.  While we look forward to the return of better times, we're uncertain what to expect in the coming year.

The following were not renewed.
