Improving Workspace on the Main Floor of Bata

Posted on January 16, 2015

You may have noticed some empty shelving on the Main Floor of Bata Library.  Or that books are being moved.  Or that at times a bit of noise and dust are being kicked up.

It's all part of our short-term and long-term plans for improving the workspace on Bata's Main Floor.photo of books being moved

This year Bata has been a very busy place, and we know that students would like more space to study and work in groups. Here's what we're doing to make some short term changes.

  • The Reference Collection is being condensed.  Some books are being shifted over, some are being moved to other locations in the Library, and a few are being discarded in order to clear out some shelving.
  • Empty shelving will be removed.
  • Existing furniture will be re-arranged to allow more space around it, and to take advantage of available power outlets.
  • Power will be added to some of our group study tables.

Long term, we hope to:

  • Remove ALL the Reference Collection from the Main Floor through a wide-spread discard and relocation process.
  • Obtain new high-tech group workstations, with power and monitors.
  • Add furniture, in particular some reproductions of original items designed specifically for Bata Library by Ron Thom.
  • Install some new accessible workstations.

We'll keep you posted on our progress. Please send us any comments at libraryhelp@trentu.ca.
