Glossary: TOPCAT

TOPCAT is our library catalogue. We use it to find out what's in our particular library. Every library has its own unique catalogue.

TOPCAT tells us everything that's in the library, whether it's a book, journal, government publication, map, Reserve reading, pamphlet, etc. It tells us the current location of each copy of a book, and its due date if it's signed out. However, TOPCAT is not specific enough to tell us what's in every issue of a journal or on each page of a book. We use indexes for this information.

See more information about using TOPCAT and reading records in our tutorial.
