Community User Membership Policy

Note: The information on this page is subject to change during our temporary relocation, April 2017 - May 2018.
As of March 1, 2017 no new memberships or renewals will be issued until the collection is relocated within the renovated Bata Library.

 

Special Instructions for Community Users: April 27, 2017 - May 2018

During Bata Library's relocation, the main collection is stored in an off-site warehouse. Our online catalogue (TOPCAT) remains available for searching and browsing. Registered Community Users may place a HOLD on items to be retrieved from the warehouse for delivery to a Service Point on campus.

  • provide the title and author of the item
  • specify any special information (such as edition or date)

We will respond within 1-2 business days.  You will receive an automated response to your "ticket", which allows us to track it and respond to individual needs.

When the item is available for pick-up, you'll receive an email message with full instructions.

Welcome

Trent University Library welcomes Community Users to visit the library.  Our online library catalogue and public online resources as listed on our website are available for searching at all times.

Other services freely available during operating hours include access to the physical collection and the Archives, obtaining general collection assistance, use of public access computers, photocopiers and microform reading/printing equipment.  

 

User Membership and Responsibilities

Trent University Library exists primarily to support the research and study needs of the academic community.

Community users are offered limited borrowing privileges for a non-refundable fee.  Membership is available to adult residents (18+) with photo ID and proof of Ontario residency.   These privileges are extended to the registered owner only and are not transferable.  

Users are subject to Trent University Borrowing Regulations and should familiarize themselves with the library policies.  The registered user is responsible for all fines and overdue, lost or damaged library materials.   Misuse of the library card or failure to respond to notices will result in the withdrawal of borrowing privileges.

It is the responsibility of the user to inform the Library of a change to address or contact information.  Lost or stolen library cards are to be reported to the Library Service Desk immediately.

 

Borrowing Privileges

Community users may borrow books for 14 days with three renewals, provided the books have not been requested by another user.   Users are advised to review the Borrowing Regulations for details regarding specific material type loan periods and limits.

Exclusions: Users are not eligible to place holds, or borrow material from Curriculum, Media (DVD and VHS) or Reserves collections.  Trent University library does not provide Interlibrary Loan services to Community users.  These users should direct interlibrary loan requests to their public library or any other library with which they are affiliated.

Access to our licensed online resources is restricted, based on individual agreements with suppliers, however users may access any of the public resources available as listed on our website.  

Printing is limited to members of the Trent community.

 

Fees

Community users may purchase limited borrowing privileges for a non-refundable fee as follows:

$25.00 for 3 Months
$50.00 for 12 Months

The user is responsible for all materials borrowed under their account and will be charged for overdue, lost or damaged items.  Borrowing privileges are suspended when overdue and/or fine limits are reached.   A fee of $5.00 is charged for each library replacement card.

 

Application

Application may be made at either Bata Library Service Desk or Durham Branch during operating hours.  An application form, which may be printed ahead of time, must be completed.  Privileges may be renewed provided that outstanding fines are paid and no materials are overdue.
