Letters of Permission (LOP)
Trent students who wish to take courses at other universities for credit towards their Trent degree must first apply for and be granted a Letter of Permission through the Office of the Registrar.
Eligibility and Restrictions
-
Students must be currently-admitted at Trent University and in good academic standing as noted on their most recent grade report.
-
Students must have completed a minimum of 3 credits at Trent.
- LOP courses are included in the total number of credits taken in each session. Therefore, students may not register in more than 2 credits in the summer session or 2.5 credits in either the fall or winter terms of the fall/winter session without permission for a course overload from the University.
-
A maximum of 5 credits may be completed on a LOP. For transfer students this number may be lower.
- Some academic departments require that all of the required 300 and 400 level courses in student’s major(s) be completed at Trent University. See departmental requirements in the Academic Calendar.
- Five of the last seven credits of a degree must be taken at Trent University.
-
Students may petition for exemption to the LOP requirements by completing a petition with the Senior Tutor of their college.
-
Applications from students with an outstanding financial balance to the University will not be processed. If you are not financially eligible, you will see an error message when attempting to access records using myAcademicRecord.
Due to the volume of requests at certain times of the year, processing may take more than 10 business days.
