Streamflow Analysis and Assessment Software (ver. 2)

This software was developed at the Institute for Watershed Science, Trent University, in partnership with the Lands and Waters Branch and the Renewable Energy Program, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. The intent of the software is to provide an effective means to analyse streamflow data with the goal of building greater understanding of flow regimes and their characteristics that can support informed decisions on sustainable use of water resources. Ongoing development of the software will continue to increase its functionality as technical guidance is developed, including comparative assessments of natural and altered flow regimes.

How to download and unzip the software package:
SAAS is free. Making this tool available helps to achieve the goal of building greater understanding of flow regimes and faciltate informed resource management decisions. All that is asked is that you send an email requesting the password to unzip the software. If you want to add information about your intended application, great. Knowing the number of users and the applications will help guide decisions on further development and investment. Your privacy will be respected and you WILL NOT be added to any mailing list. For important bug fixes and updates, check back here regularly.

Please DO NOT redistribute this software. If you know of someone else that may find this software useful please direct them to this website to obtain their own copy directly. Installation instructions are provided in the included reference manual.

SAAS is programmed using Matlab and compiled as a 'standalone' package. However, it is necessary to have the Matlab Component Runtime (MCR) on your system which is availabel for download below and requires administrative priveledges to install.

System Requirements:

  • Windows XP
  • Minimum 300 MB hard drive space
  • Minimum 1024 x 768 monitor resolution (If you have your monitor set for a higher resolution you might want to change it to this when running SAAS for a larger GUI.)
  • Minimum 256 MB RAM
  • Read/Write privileges to at least one folder on your computer -Administrative privileges during first time installation

System Recommendations:

  • 1.5 GHz Processor or faster recommended
  • 1 GB of RAM or more recommended for large datasets

An updated version (version 2.1.1) of this software is available

Hydrometric Query Tool for Ontario (HqO)

The Hydrometric Query Tool for Ontario is a software tool developed at the Watershed Science Centre. This tool allows you to query hydrometric gauges throughout Ontario by spatial location, by physical attribute, and by historical hydrometric statistics. A graphic user interface with a central map display makes visualization of the data more intuitive. You can obtain tabular data and drainage divide data associated with a gauge by simply selecting a gauge's location on the map display or by means of a radial search tool and a distance measurement tool. Gauges can be queried using logical query expressions which filter the gauges based on their physical attributes. The construction of the attribute query is accomplished through an easy to use interface which guides you through the process. The filtered results of the attribute query are also displayed on the tool's map display. You have the option to export the results of both the spatial and attribute queries to a text file which can easily be opened within most spreadsheet or database applications.
Note: An image viewer has been included with this tool as a place holder of this potential functionality. However, currently only gauge 02HJ002 has images associated with it. In the future we hope to be able to collect an image library of gauges throughout Ontario.

Systems Requirements:

The tool requires Windows2000 or WindowsXP with 80MB of available hard-drive space. A 600 MHz or faster processor and at least 64MB of RAM are recommended for optimal performance.

Install:

After accepting the terms of use and downloading and "unzipping" the files you can install the tool by simply clicking the SETUP.EXE found in the installation package. The windows installer program will guide you through the installation process. The default settings will install the tool to your C: drive and register all the necessary components on your system. In some cases the installer may inform you that a file on your system is a newer version than what is being installed, if this happens choose to keep the newer file and continue.

Uninstall:

In order to remove the program cleanly from your system, please make sure the tool is not currently running on your system and then use the "ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS" function found in the Windows Control Panel. After you remove the program all the registered components will have been removed from your system. The ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS uninstall leaves behind only the installation folder and the data folder found inside it. It is safe to delete this folder using your file explorer.

Download HqO Application ... Note: This application requires updates to the hydrometric metadata. It is therefore unavailble until further notice.

Environment Canada Hydrologic Software Packages

The following hydrologic software packages are available for free-of-charge download here. They are made available by Environment Canada through the Institute for Watershed Science.

........................................................................

Consolidated Frequency Analysis (CFA)

This package was developed by the Surveys and Information Systems Branch, Environment Canada. The CFA is a hydrologic software package for the analysis and graphing of extreme data. The MS-DOS program performs both parametric and non-parametric analysis of extreme daily and instantaneous data from the HYDAT CD-ROM.

NOTE: The ZIP file below is password protected, the password for the CFA zip file is “cfa” (lowercase)!

................................................................

Low-Flow Frequency Analysis (LFA)

This package was developed by the Climate/Water Information Branch, Environment Canada. The LFA is a hydrologic software package for the analysis and graphing of the frequency of occurrence of selected low flows, based on streamflow records at one or more gauging sites. LFA uses exported streamflow data from the HYDAT CD-ROM to evaluate low flows for a variety of surface water studies (e.g., water supply, fish habitat management, network planning) using a Gumbel Type III distribution.
