Source Water Protection: Expert Workshops

In the Fall of 2006, the Watershed Science Centre consulted with experts and practitioners in source water protection to poll their opinions on the strategic research needs related to the project theme areas (Table 1).  For theme areas 1, 2 and 3, initial consultations consisted of three meetings organized to bring together groups of 12 - 20 practitioners, academics, and representatives of NGOs and provincial government agencies (i.e. OMNR, OMOE).  The details regarding the dates, locations of these meetings as wel las the final reports are summarized in Table 2.  For Theme 4, meetings were held between representatives of OMNR and OMOE to evaluate research needs.  This approach was taken in the latter case because it was felt that the two provincial agencies had developed an advanced understanding of the data gaps and research needs of the regional and local organizations (i.e. Conservation Authorities, municipalities) that will be developing plans for the protection of quantities of surface water and groundwater.

In November, 2006, the Watershed Science Centre prepared reports that summarized the results of the consultation meetings, and sent these reports to the meeting participants for comment. Following the development of these reports, the Watershed Science Centre continued to consult with individuals that were involved in the theme meetings to further refine the research needs identified under Themes 1, 2 and 3. Meetings with representatives from OMOE and OMNR continued into January, 2007 to define the research needs related to Theme 4.
