Faculty Services
Information Technology is responsible for the implementation and support of all voice, data, multi-media and instructional technology support services within Trent University, excepting student residence services.
Accounts
Trent faculty accounts provide you access to the TrentNet network, Home and Shared drives with nightly backups, lecture facilities, Groupwise email, myTrent, University licensed software through the Application Explorer.
All faculty accounts must be validated by Human Resources, The Department of Research or The Dean's Office.
Class distribution lists
Email lists to all enrolled students are rebuilt nightly on a class by class basis. Addressing is in the following format: psyc-501h-a@trentu.ca. Where 'h' indicates a half course and 'a' refers to section designation (all classes with only one section are 'a' by default). Oshawa class addresses look like ''psyc-501h-a-osh@trentu.ca''.
Computing Support
The total cost of a computer goes well beyond the initial purchase and extends throughout the entire life cycle of the computer to include all support and maintenance activity for its 4 year lifespan.
In order to minimize the cost of support and maintenance of Trent University Computer Systems, IT specifies a standard computer system configuration designed to allow the use of a common software image across all of our computers, which greatly simplifies the ongoing management and support of those computers through the network. Computers ordered through our hardware vendor come pre-imaged and ready to login to the network.
Email
Trent University provides a Novell GroupWise account.
The GroupWise client combines your messaging, scheduling, and calendaring requirements into one program.
GroupWise WebAccess offers the ability to access GroupWise anytime, anywhere. Faculty can access their email on or off campus, by logging into myTrent and selecting the email tab.
LearningSystem
Online course content is delivered through the LearningSystem. Logging on to the LearningSystem is integrated through myTrent.
The LearningSystem encourages student interaction, small-group work, and peer knowledge sharing. It also enhances student’s critical thinking skills using interactive tools.
Courses are designed to leverage student participation, communication, and collaboration. Instruction Guides for My Learning System can be found here.
Panopto
The IT department manages a lecture capture platform called Panopto Webcast. Content that has been recorded using this can be viewed, via the Tools tab and selecting WebCast in the Trent portal. The Panopto equipment has been installed in selected lecture theatres to allow lectures to be captured easily. The current rooms with this technology include Wenjack Theatre, Science Complex Lecture Hall, OC 203, Oshawa Room 121.The recordings can be viewed in a number of ways, via the website, via an audio or video podcast, or downloaded and put on a data CD or DVD to be viewed 'offline'.
