International Transfer Credit Policy

Trent University will recognise your previous learning experience outside of Canada by granting Advanced Standing status in your degree program at Trent, provided that your studies are equivalent in their content and rigour. While transfer credits will not be included in your cumulative GPA, they will be counted towards your degree as satisfying Trent degree requirements.

Advanced High School Programs

Trent University automatically grants transfer credit equivalencies for the following advanced high school programs:

  • Advanced Placement (AP) courses with examination grades of '4' or higher.
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level or Advanced Subsidiary courses with grades of 'C' or higher. Two AS courses may be substituted for one A Level course.
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level subjects with grades of '5' or higher.

A maximum of 5 Trent credits (equivalent to one year of full-time study) may be granted according to the Equivalency Tables.

Accredited Universities and Colleges

Trent University may grant transfer credit equivalency for academic work completed previously at accredited universities or colleges outside of Canada. A maximum of 10 Trent credits (equivalent to two years of full-time study) may be granted.

Only the academic courses with grades of ‘C’ or higher, completed as part of an accredited university degree, college diploma or associate degree, will be considered for transfer credit, provided that there is an essential equivalency in course content. If you already have a first degree from another university, you cannot undertake a second degree at Trent in the same field of study.

If your institution has an Articulation Agreement (Degree Completion Program) with Trent University, and you meet the requirements of the agreement, you will automatically receive 10 Trent credits as specified in the agreement. Please refer to the academic calendar for details.

Transfer credit is designated in three different ways:

  1. Assigned credit is given for courses with a direct Trent University equivalent (e.g., BIOL 102H).
  2. Unassigned credit in a subject area is given for courses without Trent University equivalent, but which are acceptable by the department as fulfilling subject requirements towards a degree in that department (e.g., MATH Year 2).
  3. General elective credit is given for courses that are comparable in coursework but do not fulfill specific subject requirements in terms of their content. General elective credits are expressed in terms of Arts or Science general credits (e.g., SCIE Year 1).

A grade of “P” (pass) will be assigned to all transfer credits.

Transfer Credit Assessment Process

Transfer credits for the Advanced High School programs will be assigned automatically upon acceptance of the offer of admission. To initiate the transfer credit evaluation of any other courses you must:

  1. At the time of applying for admission: Provide official detailed course outlines, which must include topics covered, total hours of instruction spent in lectures and labs, and texts studied (notarized translations are required should the course descriptions not be in English).
  2. At the time of accepting the offer of admission: Submit an international Transfer Credit Assessment Fee of $50 CDN (or $35 US). For payment options, please check Processing Fees.

Transfer credit evaluations are conducted in consultation with the appropriate departments at Trent University, and they might take several weeks to complete. After your transfer credits have been finalised, an official transfer credit notification will be mailed to your home address.
