Students' Association in International Development (SAID)

The Students Association in International Development (SAID) strives to link the experiences of learning about, discussing, debating and acting upon issues relevant to developing countries and Indigenous communities. As a group, we're investigating the connection between learning about global issues and using that knowledge to affect change; through action and education we endeavour to raise awareness of development issues and the existence of alternatives to economic globalization.

Annual SAID Conference

The Student's Association of International Development (SAID) organizes an annual conference. The theme of the 2008 Conference focused on community-based social change. The theme for the 2009 Conference is food sovereignty. View the poster, or have a look at the flyer for the keynote speaker.

Among the participants in SAID conference are students, activists, academics from Canada and around the globe. A key objective of the conferences has been to deepen communication and promote solidarity both locally and globally through workshops, dialogue and critical reflections on challenges in international development.

The Community Movements Conference

“Just Work!? Vulnerabilities in the Global Workforce”

The theme for the 2010 conference, “Just Work!? Vulnerabilities in the Global Workforce” encompassed many facets of labour. Today’s global workforce seems to be faced with two conflicting objectives: the first is the imperative to “just work” under new forms of injustice and increasingly exploitative conditions; the second has emerged out of the struggle and demand for work that is just. This year’s community movements conference focused on exploring these two contrasting dimensions at the local and global level.

The Community Movements Conference brought together academics, practitioners, labour union organizers, and community members to speak and lead workshops on a variety of topics, including the changing face of labour

and the demand for just labour.

This conference took place in Peterborough, from Friday, February 5th, to Sunday February 7th.
