Trent India Internship 2010

The Trent International Program (TIP) and the Department of International Development Studies (IDST) at Trent University invite applications for a summer internship, from mid-May to September 2010, tenable at CUTS International’s Centre for International Trade, Economics and Environment (CITEE) http://www.cuts-citee.org. Headquartered in Jaipur, India, CUTS International is a not-for-profit civil society organisation, now operating for over 25 years, working on issues of trade, regulation, environment and governance. The CUTS Centre for International Trade, Economics and Environment carries out research and advocacy on issues related to the environment, economics and trade. Its mandate covers trade issues, regional cooperation and climate change from a developmental and southern perspective.  The internship provides up to $8,000 to cover the cost of travel, living, and all relevant expenses for the summer period.

CUTS-CITEE is currently implementing a year-long project entitled “Scoping Study on Impact of Climate Change and Food Insecurity on Poverty,” funded by Oxfam-Novib. Its purpose is to address the impact of climate change on food security, in four South Asian countries: India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. One part of the project is to develop knowledge on how South Asia could create synergies within mutually cooperative policies on food security, with a specific focus on the concept and practice of food banks. Food banks are already used in certain parts of India and an evaluation of each country’s capacity to (further) develop food banks, to ensure food availability for the poor, is central to the project.

Within the project the intern will contribute to work on a literature survey and a descriptive report on the concept of food banks across the four South Asian countries, drawing upon broader information in the public domain as well as location-specific farmer surveys.

The specific objectives for the intern are:

1. to develop 4 short briefing papers on country backgrounds and the food security situation;

2. to develop a tied synthesis paper on the concept of food banks and their relevance for food security across South Asia;

3. if possible, to develop proposals for a pan-South Asian policy on food banks.

The intern’s contribution is expected to be a part of the key recommendations of the project, and so the papers will need to be closely integrated and will pay due attention to professional standards. They will be delivered according to an agreed plan and will be presented internally and/or with stakeholders.

Upon return the intern will undertake a tour of high schools to discuss food security in the South Asian region.

Trent Internship 2010

The Trent International Program (TIP) and the Department of International Development Studies (IDST) at Trent University invite applications for a summer internship, from mid-May to September 2010, tenable at the National Economics University, Hanoi, Vietnam. The internship is in conjunction with the Master's Program in Development Economics (MDE) (www.mde.edu.vn), a joint initiative of the National Economics University (NEU) and the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Hague, the Netherlands. Trent has partnered with the NEU MDE for the past three years, providing crucial support to its programming, and to Vietnamese graduate students. The internship provides up to $8,000 to cover the cost of travel, living, and all relevant expenses for the summer period.

The intern will be involved in:

Curriculum development and the maintenance of course outlines. The Intern's access to course materials and resources on the topic of economic growth from their own research/classroom experience in Trent IDS courses will be an asset to MDE.

The research thesis is the culmination of the MDE. It requires students to undertake independent research, using the material and methods learnt in 2 years of course-based study. The intern will assist Vietnamese students in developing their thesis proposal and thesis design. Vietnam's tertiary education sector is still dominated by expectations to replicate the views of teachers, and, in the social sciences, still has a strong Marxist-Leninist ideological component. Therefore, the independent research component of the MDE can be most challenging to its students. The Canadian intern's experience and excellence in the area of interdisciplinary research will advance MDE students' ability to undertake research theses that incorporate both the creative and analytic insight of interdisciplinary approaches. Moreover, by engaging the students one-on-one in research thesis planning, the intern will be able to influence the economic growth perspectives of that research.

The MDE organizes a bi-weekly seminar series hosted at the World Bank office. This is an important outreach activity and over the years more than one hundred speakers have presented their work. The intern is expected to contribute to the implementation of this series in collaboration with MDE staff and students. The seminar is a direct public engagement activity, and the intern will be able to coordinate events to directly engage discussion and community involvement on issues of economic growth.

The MDE is taught in English and requires that students consider the cultural context of the countries where English is spoken. The intern is expected to assist in the organization of a 'toastmaster's club' to help MDE students develop their communication and presentation skills.
