Issues with scam emails

Several landlords and students have reported that they have been contacted by individuals claiming to be students.

 

• These "students" e-mail the landlords and explain that they are from overseas and are interested in their accommodations.

 

• Please note that Trent does have many students who seek accommodations from overseas, one way to protect yourself is to use an application form to learn more about the student, or to contact them by phone.

 

• After email correspondence with the "student," the landlord or student receives fake cheques/money grams. The money grams sent equal more than what the rental amount. The student then asks the landlord to send back the balance.

• Try to make sure that this is someone that you can meet and speak to

 

• Always verify cheques and money orders before accepting them

 

• Verify any references or information about the potential tenant

 

• Trust your instincts
