Self Paced Training

The Education and Safety Association of Ontario, (ESAO) have developed several CD-based self-paced instruction programs. 

The following programs are available to University Programs and Departments through RESERVE in the Library under Reserves Course Name "RISK MANAGEMENT" with instructor name "BLACKBURN, BRENDA" available for two-day loan.  You can ask for these CD's by number at the Circulation Desk:

  • Occupational Health and Safety Orientation: CD-ROM 045
  • WHMIS for Everyone: The Essentials: CD-ROM 047
  • Contracted Services: Employer Liability for Health and Safety and the Temporary Worker: CD-ROM 046

Once you have completed the course, please print the certificate and send it through internal mail to: Risk Management, Blackburn Hall.

 
  • Occupational Health and Safety Orientation:

"This CD presents an overview of Occupational Health and Safety.  The information will assist new employees in their understanding of their basic rights and responsibilities  and the duties of their employer.   This knowledge will serve as a foundation for continued training, which ultimately should include a review of the Occupational Health and SAfety Act and Health and Safety training specific to the workplace.

Included in this CD is a downloadable Quiz to record the completion of training."

  • WHMIS for Everyone: The Essentials:

"This CD contains an overview of health and safety legislation in Canada that will assist workers' understanding and application of their basis rights and responsibilities and the duties of their employer and supervisor. Links are provided for the participant to access the applicable health and safety and WHMIS legislation in their jurisdiction.  This training program will serve as a foundation for continued training."

  • Contracted Services: Employer Liability for Health and Safety and the Temporary Worker:

"This CD contains an overview of Occupational Health and Safety that outlines the duties and responsibilities of employers, supervisors and workers.  Contracted Services may include, but are not limited to, food services, cleaning, maintenance, security, grounds keeping, building modifications and construction.  Downloadable samples of scenarios, procedures and forms are also available."

Wilderness First Aid Training

A course overview is below. Standard first aid and CPR is included in this training. 

 

Space in each session is limited to 16 participants.  This course is being offered on a charge-back basis at a cost of $137.71 per participant.   In the event of a cancellation accounts will be charged unless the spot can be filled.  Complete applications will be accepted in the order they are received.  

 

To register please send a completed application form (click on dates above) to the Risk Management Office, room 108, Blackburn Hall or fax the completed form to 705-748-1009.

 

Employees who complete this course will be asked to post their first aid certificates and provide first aid assistance, to the best of their abilities, as required.  First aid training information will also be posted on the Health and Safety intranet portal and bulletin boards.

 

All departments are reminded that first aid kits can be obtained by contacting the Risk Management Department.  Departments should check their first aid kits at least quarterly and contact Risk Management for any supplies that may be required.   Departments are not charged for first aid kits or first aid supplies.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This 2-day skills based program represents the minimum standard of training for the outdoor leader, instructor, guide or recreational adventurer. It provides a practical perspective on dealing with common wilderness injuries through to life threatening situations.

The program is divided between classroom and practical skills, utilizing scenarios and simulations to enhance learning and develop effective interventions and competent patient care.
