How Trent Geography Alumni Are Making a Difference

Mike Smith, B.Sc. (Hons) 2003
Water Resource Technician, Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority
Working as part of GRCA’s Watershed Services Team since 2006, Mike is responsible for monitoring surface water and groundwater resources. He provides flood forecasting and warning and drought response services to local municipalities. He has undertaken detailed studies of baseflow hydrology, surface water impacts due to development and water takings as well as the effects of different hydrologic conditions such as storm event runoff on water quality. He also monitors groundwater resources using a network of streambed piezometers and monitoring wells. Water resources monitoring data has proven extremely valuable in characterizing watersheds prior to development, identifying unique natural features worth protecting or enhancing and in protecting sources of drinking water. A practical understanding of monitoring equipment technology coupled with a theoretical understanding of natural systems has been essential in fulfilling the duties of this position.
Jason T. Belleghem, B.Sc. (Hons) 2004

Through inspections and monitoring of licensed aggregate sites, Jason ensures operators are in compliance with the legislation, their licence conditions and site plans. Wayne Boulton, B.Sc. (Hons) 1995, M.Sc. (Guelph)
General Manager of Middle East Operations and Associate
with RWDI
RWDI is a Canadian founded Environmental and Wind Engineering
Consulting firm that specializes in providing innovative and creative
solutions to complex problems around the world.
Wayne started his career with RWDI in 1997 as an air quality modeller
and wind tunnel technician, following which he became the lead Business
Development and Project Manager for a number of RWDI's more niche
service areas (meteorology and atmospheric chemistry modelling; software
development and GIS, etc.). Having spent several years in this
capacity, Wayne and his family recently moved to Abu Dhabi in the UAE
where he has taken on the exciting role of General Manager of Middle
East Operations.
Over the last few years Wayne has partnered with Dr. Cheryl McKenna
Neuman and the Trent Environmental Wind Tunnel to perform a number of
research projects pertaining to fugitive and wind-blown dust emissions
from industrial operations. "It is great to be able to give back to
Trent Geography in this way" says Wayne. "It provides students
and faculty with an opportunity to get involved in real-world problems
in a collaborative, consulting-based environment".
Lisa Boulton nee Colterman, B.Sc. (Hons) 1995
Lisa is a Teaching Assistant in a Grade 2 class at the
GEMS American Academy in Abu Dhabi. She spends her free time planning family excursions into the
deserts of the UAE and Oman.
Wayne and Lisa are parents to Patrick and Samantha featured in the photo from one of their recent excursions.
"We still get together on occasion with
friends from TUGS and reminisce about old times" says Lisa, who also
shares that she probably learned as much sitting around in the Crypt as she
did in the classroom but that she could not have asked for a better
University experience.

collaborate and create to deliver cool stuff...

Richard has pursued a 30-year career in environmental management that has taken him across North America, Europe, Africa and the Middle-East, and has included government service, private-sector industrial operations, consulting, international development, and now investment and operation of climate-change projects. He is currently engaged in an ambitious climate-change CDM project to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions from over 300 industrial plants pursuant to the Kyoto Protocol.
Richard is married to Olga (nee Derech – Trent, Psychology, 1971-1976) and they are the proud parents of Natalie and Michael. They reside in Mississauga Ontario, and Richard has only missed one of the famous TUGS reunions since 1976 – other than for the unfortunately numerous times when he has been out of the country at the time.
