Frost Centre Research Funds

Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies

Funds for Faculty

Calls for applications are made each year in January.

The central aim of the Frost Centre Research Fund is to foster research in Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies in keeping with the mandate of the Frost Centre. Applications are encouraged for interdisciplinary projects that meet one of the following criteria:

  • are seed grants for larger research projects

  • are exploratory in nature and designed to build research networks and collaborations with colleagues, other institutions in the academy, communities, NGOs, or the applied sector

  • are small in scope and can be accomplished in their entirety with a modest budget

  • further the dissemination of relevant research results (this includes, but is not limited to such things as web-site development, compilation of book indexes, or re-distribution of materials back to communities).

Every effort will be made to distribute the funds equitably among deserving applicants. The committee will look favourably upon projects that have a component of graduate student involvement, but are not designed to fund graduate student research specifically.  Applicants are requested to participate in only one application. The application must detail any other sources of research funding being sought or already awarded for the project.

Monies can be requested for such things as travel, accommodation, and subsistence for library and archival research; to conduct interviews; to conduct exploratory trips to assess the potential of a research project; for transcription costs; fees for the reproduction of images and texts; photocopying costs, library fees, or ILL expenses; or to hire research assistants to do data entry, background/logistical research and/or bibliographic work. Awards cannot be made for the purchase of computers or other equipment, for conference travel costs, or to subsidize the publication of such things as conference proceedings or journal special issues etc.

Each application must include the following:

  • a detailed statement of objectives (maximum one page, double spaced, 12 pt. type)

  • a research/project plan and timetable (maximum two pages, double spaced, 12 pt. type)

  • a detailed budget

  • names, addresses and email addresses of two referees who are familiar with the applicant’s research.  It is expected that these referees would be from the academic community. Only one of these can be from Trent. In the case of applied, community-based, or work with NGOs, contact information should be supplied for appropriate individuals representing such organizations. The Research Committee may ask applicants to solicit letters of support from these referees.
