Harrington's short story, 'Lukey's Boat,' had been published in several national magazines as part of a series sponsored by the Canadian Bank of Commerce. Harrington wrote in a letter to D.G. Pitt (25 October 1984): 'The Canadian Bank of Commerce ... doubted the authenticity of my authorship ... and asked E.J. for his opinion. He replied that my work "breathed the very sea air of Newfoundland".'
