The ERS Program offers a wide variety of science and studies courses. Below are links to course registration information, and a current ERS Program course list.

In your first year of Environmental Resources Studies (ERS), you will be taking an Introduction to Environmental Science / Studies. You can view the ERSC 1000Y 2010FW course syllabus, which gives you a sense of the course content.

Course Registration

Registration Notes and Changes in ERS 2011-12

Course Codes and Definitions

  • Trent courses have a 4-digit course code.

  • A "Y" following the course number (e.g., ERSC 3200Y) indicates a full-credit course.

  • You may notice that the ERS course descriptions in the University Calendar contain "exclusions". This occurs when 3-digit course codes have been changed to 4 digits, and also when full-courses have been changed to new half-courses (e.g., ERST-CAST 250 has become ERST-CAST 2520H and 2525H and both exclude the original ERST-CAST 250). The new courses must exclude the old courses because the content is similar, and credit cannot be given for the same course material twice.

Bachelor of Environmental Science/Studies (B.E.S.S.) Degree

The Bachelor of Environmental Science/Studies (B.E.S.S.) degree option is available to:

  • students starting at Trent in 2009-10 and later with a minimum high school average of 75%.
  • students who achieved 75% or better in ERSC 100 in 2008-09.

General Degree Program

The General Degree Program option will not be available to students starting at Trent in 2009-10 and later. Those who have already started the General Degree Program may complete it by following the degree requirements that were in effect during the year they declared their major.

Specializations

The ERS Specializations options will not be available to students starting at Trent in 2009-10 and later. Those who are part way through a Specialization may finish it by completing the course requirements.

Notes

  • Students majoring in ERSC who have completed ERSC 220 must use the 2008-09 degree requirements.

  • Students who have received ERSC 220 as a transfer credit, but lack CHEM 1000H and 1010H, must still obtain one full Chemistry credit.

  • Students majoring in ERST who have taken ERST-CAST 250 and are now using the 2009-10 degree requirements, must also obtain either ERSC 2240H or ERST-GEOG 2510H.

  • Students pursuing the B.E.S.S. degree option may not take ERSC 2210H (221H) or ERST 2570H (257H).

  • Although CHEM 1000H and 1010H are no longer required for any of the ERS degrees, students majoring in Environmental Chemistry or taking upper-year ERS courses should check to see if these courses are required as prerequisites.

Timetable

  • ERSC 2220H (2009FA) and ERSC 2240H (2009FA) labs do not conflict with one another.
They have the same lab schedule, alternating weekly. So a student registered in both courses can take the same lab time for both courses, and will attend 2220H lab one week, and 2240H lab in the alternate week.

ERS Registration Process

For most courses, simply use the MyAcademicRecord section of MyTrent to add and remove courses during registration. View a full course list in the Trent Timetable or below. If a course is full or being manually managed for registration, you can put yourself on the courses's wait list. If you lack the prerequisites for a course, you must ask permission from the course instructor to take the course before you can be registered; if permission is given then contact the ERS Program office to arrange to be registered.

Note that registration in a few ERS Program courses require some extra steps:

  • ERSC-BIOL 2700Y Applicants:
Students wishing to register in ERSC-BIOL 2700Y, who are not in the Concurrent, Consecutive Education or Education Emphasis Programs, should contact Professor Michael Fox (mfox@trentu.ca, 748-1011 x7873, ESC A120).

  • ERS Reading Course Applicants (ERSC/T 3900Y/3901H/4900Y/4901H):
Students wishing to register in an ERS Reading course must pick up a Reading Course application form from the ERS Program office (ESC B202), complete it with their reading course supervisor, and return it to the ERS Program office for approval before the last date to add the course.
Successful applicants will be registered in the appropriate reading course in September.

  • ERS Thesis Course Applicants (ERSC/T 4010Y/4020D):
Students wishing to register in an ERS Thesis course must pick up an application form from the ERS Program Office (ESC A202), complete it with their thesis course supervisor, and deliver it to the ERS thesis course co-ordinator, Professor David Holdsworth (dholdsworth@trentu.ca, 748-1011 x7642, ESC B308), for approval.
Successful applicants will be registered in the appropriate thesis course in September.

ERS Program Course List for 2011-12

Notes:

  • Recent course syllabi are provided to give a sense of what material the course covers, but note that in most courses changes do occur from year to year.
  • Course numbers nowhave 4 digits. Some oldersyllabi provided may refer to the course's old 3-digit number, but unless otherwise noted, the course is the same.
  • Anatomy of a course code:
    • The 4-letter prefixes represent a Trent Department or Program (e.g., the ERS Program uses ERSC for science courses and ERST for studies/arts courses; Biology uses BIOL, Geography uses GEOG)
    • More than one 4-letter prefix means the course is cross-listed (offered jointly) by all the Departments/Programs listed.
    • The course number is 4 digits.
    • The letter suffix is either "H" (1/2 credit), "Y" (1 credit), or "D" (2 credits).
  • Anatomy of a term code:
    • The standard academic year has 2 terms: FA (fall) and WI (winter).
    • Courses that run through both terms are designated FW.
    • Summer courses (SU) run in either of two terms (S61 or S62) or through both terms (S12).
    • Example: for the coming 2011-12 year, the fall term is 2011FA and the winter term is 2012WI, while courses that run the full year use the term code 2011FW.
