Student Representation on English Department Committees

Most of the business of the English Department, with the exception of matters personally affecting individual faculty (e.g., course staffing, hiring, leaves, promotion) and students (e.g., petitions, prizes and awards) is conducted by the English Departmental Committee.

The Departmental Committee consists of faculty members of the Department and 10 student representatives, with 2 students representing each of the four years and one student representing students in “Trent in Oshawa.”  There is also one graduate student representative.

Once all of the student representatives have been elected, the Departmental Committee comes together to elect 2 students to serve on the Executive Committee, and at least 2 students to serve on the Curriculum Committee.

Your departmental representatives for 2010-11 are:

  • 1st year
    • Victoria Dickson
    • Sandra Robinson

  • 2nd year
    • Geoffrey Baker

    • Wyatt Short
  • 3rd Year
    • Mike MacKenzie

    • Kristen Niles
  • 4th Year
    • Edward Gallagher
    • Riley McDonald
  • JBC Rep.
    • Tammy McDonald
  • Graduate Rep.
    • Chris Doody

The Executive Committee deals with the day-to-day administration of the Department and with all matters -- particularly personnel matters -- which require confidentiality. Its membership consists of 4 elected faculty members, 2 student members and the Chair of the English Department.  As a rule, at least one of the student representatives is a fourth-year student.

In 2010-11, your representatives on this committee are Edward Gallagher and Riley McDonald.

The Curriculum Committee consists of 3 faculty members and at least 2 students, with the Chair of Department ex officio.  It monitors the effectiveness of the English curriculum and reviews proposals for change. Occasionally – as in 2005-06 when the entire curriculum was restructured – this can be a very exciting job!  However, most years, this Committee’s work is less heavy.

In 2008-09, your representatives on the Curriculum Committee are Elizabeth McIntosh, Josh Lambert, Alexandria Hepburn, and Amberle Tannahill.

How to get elected

If you are interested in getting involved, watch for notices about the English Department Graduate Information Meeting.  This is when the 4th year representatives are elected. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd year reps are elected in the second meetings of English 1000, 2100 and 3210 in September.  The “Trent in Oshawa” representative is also chosen in September.
