Who Am I?

My name is Sarah Keefer. I was born in Montreal and moved to Ontario part-way through my undergraduate career in 1970. All of my degrees -- B.A. (1973), M.A (1974) and PhD (1978) -- are from the University of Toronto. I was married to Richard Keefer in 1975, and we have two children, Matt and Katrina, now in their twenties. We live with our Keeshonden and barn cats on 55 acres out in the Cavan Hills, and have a horse-farm: when I am not being an academic, I am being 'rural', riding one of my horses, working on our land or in our fields, bringing in hay or improving the wetlands and woodlot. I ride and compete in Canadian dressage (Basic through Medium levels), and we are also developing a breeding project for good dressage horses from Dutch Warmblood and Canadian Sport Horse lines. We have a farm house that was built in 1896 which we heat primarily with wood from our own lot ... but we also have five phone lines into the house and, at last count, six computers. Richard is a scientist and an inventor, trained as an electrochemist; I became a medievalist after classical training in Latin and Greek, and my primary area of interest lies in Anglo-Saxon England, between 600 and 1100 A.D. My main area of research lies in studying the liturgy of the Anglo-Saxon Church for its influence on the culture of the period, while Richard works with microwave, food chemistry and water science. It is therefore not surprising that we blend both the traditional and the innovative in everything we do!
